OHS students have started breakfast tailgates on the mornings of home football games. We love this and hope this student initiated tradition continues. #SpartanPride

bit.ly/OlyCBB Teaching kids character strengths and life skills such as empathy is one of the most important jobs of being an adult. These great books for all ages help make it easier by celebrating friendship, difference, and the importance of caring for one another.

#DigCit Family Tip 4: Encourage upstanding

Upstanding
Video: bit.ly/OlyCBV7 As humans, we thrive on social connections and group associations. But this tendency can also lead us to be suspicious of people outside our group. This fear -- xenophobia -- can be overcome by more exposure to people who are different from us. However, the internet can often make this more difficult. Help your kids recognize this challenge and find strategies for navigating content online.

Hate Speech
The freshmen volleyball game scheduled for tonight Oct. 17th has been cancelled due to a lack of players by our opponent. The JV game will start at 5:30pm, followed by the varsity game. We will honor our senior volleyball players prior to the start of the varsity game.

As the temperature dips into 40 degrees for race morning, we know postseason for XC is just around the corner! This past Saturday, the OHS Cross Country team competed at the St. Anthony Bulldog Classic. Our girls’ team posted a strong second place finish behind Mt. Zion by 9 points. The boys claimed a third place finish with multiple runners back in the lineup as we near the end of the season. Amelia Kistner blazed the path to a 3rd place individual finish in a time of 19:08! Notably, this time is over 3 minutes faster than Amelia ran last year at this same course! In a 30 second 2-4 split, Emma Swartzendruber, Anna Bieber, and Chrystal Cornwell finish in 19:59, 20:17, and 20:29, respectively. Cam Lawson rounded out the scoring with a 21:11! Kaylie Dare finished closely behind with an incredible kick in 21:14 followed by Rachel Andris and Raquel Birky in 21:50 and 22:20, respectively. Look for our ladies to show a strong performance this weekend while competing for a Regional Championship! The boys’ side saw Jacob Lawless and Logan Farquhar back in action as we near the postseason. They both posted strong finishes as our number 5 and 6 runners in 19:11 and 19:21. Our first 4 runners all placed well with Logan Demling leading the charge in a 6th place time of 16:45. Cooper Phillips finished over 2 minutes faster than last year while running a 17:17! Caden Clark and C.J. Moore ran 17:26 and 18:01, respectively. Three freshmen runners round out our team with Evan Petri posting a strong time of 19:39. He was followed by Paul Yeary dipping under 21 minutes in 20:56! Reece Yero closed to a 22:26 for a 3-mile course personal best! Our races for Regionals will take place at Eureka Lake Park with the girls running at 10 and the boys at 11. Come out and cheer on your Spartan athletes!

Cyberbullying Tips
On Friday October 21st, Olympia High School is hosting a tailgate for Spartan Football Fans before the Homecoming football game. There are only 20 spots that are available for this fun event and they are located on the North side of the football field in the Unit Office parking lot. The parking lot will be closed to any other traffic. Each purchased spot in the tailgate area comes with 4 free admissions to the game and 4 of the famous FFA porkchop sandwiches. We encourage people to bring their favorite food side dishes to enjoy this time before the game. The tailgate lot will open at 4:30 p.m. Each spot costs $50 and in order to reserve one of the 20 available spots, we ask that you call Michelle Olson at 309-379-6011 extension 9022 or email her at michelle.olson@olympia.org. We hope to fill up all 20 of these spots quickly so please reserve your spot today.

Role Play
bit.ly/OlyCBV2 As kids grow, they'll naturally start to communicate more online, but some of what they see could make them feel hurt, sad, angry, or even fearful. Help your students build empathy for others and learn strategies to use when confronted with cyberbullying.
