Since the beginning of the year, the Olympia horticulture class has been working hard in the greenhouse growing different types of plants to sell in this years plant sale.
In the beginning of January, the OHS Horticulture class starts to plant seeds and plugs to grow plants through the year. This is a great way to educate the class for many reasons.
When all the plants come in or when it comes to even planting the seeds, the students must first understand how to plant them in the soil. Depending on the size of the plant, the students must know what container to plant them in and how much soil to put in the container.
Once the plants are growing, they will begin to need things like fertilizer. There are different types of fertilizer to put on the plants such as water soluble fertilizers and fertilizers crystals.
Another thing to take into account when growing plants is pest. The pest can range anywhere from bugs to mice. Traps are put out and chemicals are sprayed to help eliminate the pest.
After all of the hard work is done, students begin to prepare for the plant sale were they have a wide variety of flowers and vegetables. The sale took place over the first two weekends in May.
FFA member, Dawson Banister, said, “ It went really good as we always had a continuous flow of customers throughout the days of the plant sale.”
Mr. Hoffman said,” Total sales was about $6700 and this was by far the best plant sale we have had yet and I hope to keep improving in the upcoming years.”
