The Olympia varsity boys track team is expecting big things this season as their first practice took place on Tuesday, February 19. Several returning runners are set to have their best season yet.

Jake Spaid, a senior distance runner, is very optimistic on the success of the team this season. He believes the distance part of the team will be the strongest this season.

“Our 4x8 and 4x4 teams definitely have the potential to make it to state,” said Spaid. He also expects that the strong seasons the two relays had last year will carry on into this season.

That being said, Spaid knows the spots on these relays will be highly coveted. He knows he has to work harder than ever to keep his spot on these relays, as the competition will be fierce. Spaid has also tried something new this off season to improve.

“Most off seasons I usually just run an extended distance daily to maintain my endurance. This off season I decided to focus more on the strength aspect of running. I have been lifting several times a week to increase my strength,” said Spaid.

Logan Wheeler, a sophomore distance runner, also has high hopes for the 4x8 relay. The team will be solid, but to make it to state, they must pass through a tough sectional.

“We have the potential to go to state, but we also have one of the best sectionals in the state. If we can get through sectionals, then state is very possible,” said Wheeler.

Wheeler is expecting Justin Siebert to have a big sophomore season. Wheeler loves the amount of time Siebert has cut off of his 400 and he’ll only trend upward from here.
